Artifacts are devices left over from the previous worlds. They're generally of a more permanent and stable nature than Cyphers and, unlike Cyphers, have unique forms. They are complex, powerful, and can run out of energy. Artifacts can be scaveneged, cobbled together, or ripped from larger devices found while adventuring, it all depends on skill and a bit of luck.
Artifacts need to be identified before use (Intellect task) and due to their complex nature, usually require one more check for the first use to ensure the characters are using it properly. As the party progresses and more artifacts are found, I'll keep a list here with the known information.
Identifying Artifacts
- All artifacts must be identified before use.
- The DL is equal to the Artifacts's level.
- A character can apply effort and training to the check (Numenera-based).
- If the check is successful, all characters in the party have full use and knowledge of the device (unlocking the full item description).
- If the check is within 2 points of the DL (ie. the result is 13 for a DL 3(15) Cypher), all characters in the party get a gist of the device (unlocking some aspect of the full item description).
- Using an artifact that has not been identified requires a check of DL=Artifact Level + 2 to use.
- Using an artifact that is understood requires a check of DL=Artifact level once more.
- Identifying Artifacts gains XP at a rate of 1 XP / 1 artifact identified.
