Swibno

Territory Type:

Independent

Description:

Swibno's prewar population probably hovered around the 350 mark and it has nearly as many inhabitants there today. Most people are employed in agriculture and some fishing, though maintaining the cable-ferry is also important to the community. The ferry, which provides the only link across the Vistula north of Tczew, is profitable not only from charging tolls, but by providing goods and services to travelers. These include fuel, food, and accommodations. A sheltered harbor also offers anchorage and limited repairs for waterborne travelers.

Swibno was fortunate enough to escape serious wartime damage and decay, unlike neighboring Mikoszewo,
though recent efforts have nonetheless been made to erase lingering scars. Within the village one often sees nets hanging for mending, manual field work, and vigilant patrols by a small militia presence. The community has reputation for being safe and fairly open to outsiders. The inn in particular is an excellent location for meeting fellow travelers and exchanging information from afar.

Notable NPCs:

Gustaw, the ferry driver.

Maria Ostrowski, innkeeper of the Hotel Bartan, and council member for Swibno.

Ivar Christensen, Danish member of the International Brigade. He's billeted with a family in Swibno as part of his contract advising and training the militia.

"Sergeant" Cutter, an American corporal turned bandit who raided the eastern side of the Vistula was brought here as a prisoner along with a few of his men by the Mad Dogs during the summer. Two of the prisoners later escaped, but it is unknown if the pair included Cutter or what became of them.

Notable Factions:

Sobieszewo Island Militia exist in a minor presence on this corner of the island, the islanders trusting to the Vistula to keep their flank protected. At the riverbank there is a small OP housing a couple militia tasked with guarding the ferry. There is also a lightly occupied but heavily fortified building (a former take-out diner) which has mostly a communications purpose.

Unit Interactions:

The Mad Dogs have passed through Swibno numerous times over the past few months and are familiar to the inhabitants.
