Despite its youth as a settlement, Freehold is, after all, located in the Land of Monsters, and Veldorn plays home to ages' worth of mysteries and dangers that long precede the arrival of this newest endeavor toward civilization. Beyond these, Freehold has its own share of unsolved puzzles which plague its citizens, and which—considering the small size of the developing village—most travelers could discover with relative ease.

Murder Most Foul
A young traveler named Efraim visited Freehold in early 1373DR. He was only passing through, but his appearance—and subsequent disappearance—was tragic. Shortly after the wandering man left the village, his body was discovered near the western woodlands, mangled and nearly unrecognizable. Tracks were found leading away from the scene, which appeared to belong to small humanoids and one of the alien, undead gnolls menacing Freehold (see below). The tracks diverged, and some of them vanished. What motivated the unfortunate slaying, and how (or if) the incident is linked to any of the other goings-on in the woods, is a mystery.

The Witch in the Woods
Adoward Beastfriend, Ash Nahcomence, and Samuel Fisher, upon investigating rumors among the villagers of eerie lights and ghostly noises from within the nearby woods, discovered and rescued a young woman who was apparently being attacked by a large raven. After scaring the bird off, they followed her trail back to a clearing, where a powerful witch was brewing something unholy using humanoid parts. In the ensuing battle, the witch was killed, and the girl—heavily traumatized and rendered mute by the experience—was taken to the Kingshand Clinic and Infirmary for care, where she remains. The reasons for the witch's presence and the purpose for which she was seemingly planning to sacrifice her prisoner are dark puzzles yet to be solved, but the vile witch's death left a stain on the forest that will take much time to heal.

Undead Sightings
There have been occasional sightings of strange creatures in the area which resemble some sort of zombified gnoll. Although it's been awhile since any were seen, one was disabled and brought back to the village for study; it turns out these monstrosities are somehow alchemical in nature, rather than purely necromantic, though what that means or where they are coming from remains unknown.
