Freehold is protected by a wall of densely-packed earth, about 10 feet high by 10 feet thick, that was raised on 23 Nightal, 1373DR, by Nitis Nochan, using a powerful lyre of building taken from the spoils of the Ghauwffhwar siege. The wall is over a mile long and encloses all current homes and farmlands in Freehold, except for Sterlingview House; it, in turn, buts up against a dry moat, about 10 feet deep and filled with sharp thorns.

The Council tower in the town center enables lookouts to see for quite some distance across the flat savanna, assisted from the skies by Karou. The tower is over fifty feet high and mounted with a loud horn that can be sounded in an emergency, its call carrying at least a mile. All Freeholders are familiar with (and visitors can easily find out about) the call-codes blown on the horn:
