Isolde Vayarn

Description: Isolde Vayarn is a Mithran.  She's a striking figure with a quiet grace that commands attention in any room she enters. Her golden-red hair frames a face marked with intelligence and sharp perception, which are evident in her sea-blue eyes. She dresses beautifully, often in intricately detailed attire that can veer toward the baroque, a result of the nanotech that infuses everything about her. Though she is a technomage, there are no outward signs of technology in her appearance; instead, her radiant beauty and the luminescence of her magic are the most prominent features, belying the nanotech mastery that lies beneath the surface.

Background: Isolde doesn't remember the Mithara that existed before The Devastation.  Probably it's a mercy that the people of her world have forgotten such things.  She rose from among the ruins that were left, amidst the Long Suffering and carved out a place for herself and the people she could save from what was left behind.  For centuries, she protected her wards and helped them to regain as much of their humanity as they were capable of holding onto.

When the Empire came to Mithara, she and the other Luminaries (the word commonly used on Mithara to designate those who were able to control the nanotech infection in themselves rather than be controlled by it) tried to warn them to turn back, but they craved the technology that infused everything on the planet.  They arrived with reality anchors and shields and electromagnetic resonators, but The Devastation takes all who stand before it.  They were killed and killed.  And at last, the Empire sent a planet killer for the world.

But, before it could take them, Vex'Rock Thunderstrum arrived on Mithara!  He brought to them the Axe of Justice and played the Music of the Spheres, setting their planet free of the scourge of the Empire.  And then he had a conversation with the Luminaries.  It went like this:

Vex asked, "So, they think you don't have souls?"

Mithrans: "They think that."

Vex: "And they think you don't have intelligence?"

Mithrans: "That is also true."

Vex: "And they think your culture is meaningless?"

Mithrans, "Yes."

Vex: "They say you're dirty and diseased and they want to wipe you out."

Mithrans: "That is the case."

Vex: "You're orcs!" And the Mithrans were invited to join the Orchidium Coalition.

Isolde left Mithara, along with a few of her wards who rely on her to maintain their sense of themselves.  She became an advocate for the Coalition.  She isn't allowed to serve in the Directorate because there's real debate about whether the Mithrans are even individual, sentient beings or merely the expression of a collective virtual intelligence made to walk around and talk by the nanites. And their ability to influence emotions with their shifts in appearance is troubling to many since they lack control over it.  Isolde has done a great deal to secure lands and rights for different groups within the Orchidium and has advocated for redress for the many past pogroms against their people, which has earned her no small enmity.  She's a feared opponent in the courtroom and across a negotiating table.  Contracts with her are binding, often on a mystical level.
