The Province of Forlumbulendor, Fifth Age

The empire is now in the hands of the Dark Elves and their allies. Spurred on by their Dark Mother, they plunge the Urthe into turmoil, faction fighting faction in a struggle for power that sees the political landscape in constant flux, as their fortunes rise and fall. The strongest seek to not only hold on to what they have, but also to expand their territories and influence, to prove themselves worthy of Her.

Buffeted by howling gales, that yet cannot disperse the clinging mists, and with the ice wastes to the north encroaching further south all the time, the far-flung region of Forlumbulendor (Northern Land of Deepest Shadow; 4A: Shasta) is ignored by the real powers that seek richer prizes. And so it is that the petty and desperate flock here, seeking to make their name and fortunes, as was ever the case in better times.

The lands are dark, the great forests withered and dead, some destroyed utterly so not a stick remains. In Taurenbaraun (Forest of the Unquiet Dead; 4A: Eldarion Woods, prev. Dead Forest), shades of those that died defending the former verdant woodlands now tread the crusted earth amidst the wasted trunks, striking fear into hearts of any who hear their cries. Nestled deep within the forest is Tirisoborn (Town in the Dead Woods; 4A: Trotford), the madmen who dwell there trusting to her wooden walls to keep the ghosts at bay.

Most waterways are dark and sluggish, a haven for insects and disease, or else have dried up completely. Only a few rivers now flow cleanly, amongst them the Oroduin (Mountain River; 4A: River Isk) upon which sits Talhamnoduin (City Sitting upon the River; 4A: Iskbridge), the only centre of any note in the region, with her bloody arena in which the fighting and bloodshed never ceases. Her ruler Dinaer, the Silent One, exacts tribute from whoever would hold any semblance of authority, and bides her time, waiting to make her move ... or perhaps only for another, stronger foe to overcome her.

Further south, the grim city Tal'Baed'iear (City of the Dead by the Sea; 4A: Merton) glowers in the ruins of what was once to be a great port, a link to the southern lands ... but neither ship nor any living thing go there now, for on its streets the Dead alone walk.

Tolmanustavor (Isle of Everlasting Fire; 4A: Kalibar) is the site where the last battle of the old Age was fought. For so long it was the last bastion in the North, holding out against the tide of Darkness when all else had fallen, yet at the last so too did perish the once great city that stood there. Through great magics, did her defenders try to save her, raising the waters around to cut her off from the mainland. But her foes forced their captives into the churning waters, countless thousands of them, until their drowned corpses formed a bridge across which the attackers marched their armies. And when the victors returned, where once the city stood there was naught but flames and blackened ground, flames that still burn to this day.

In this terrible place, the People labour in thralldom, subject to their masters' whims, struggling to raise what pitiful crops they can, lucky to keep even the worst of their produce for themselves and their familes, while the best goes to the tables of their masters. Fear and violence walk the land, and there are few that hold any hope.
