Protagonist, a.k.a Hiro Hamada, lived in 20th Century California and invented Minibots, which would evolve over time (first into Microbots, then into Xels to become what are now known as PLixels.

Additionally, before Hinobi was given exclusive rights to the patents, the primary manufacturer of such devices was KT Industries, which produced the first and last Microbots in the 1940s during WWII.

Hiro lived a long, wonderful life but he died in 1986 as the methods used to extend human life had not yet been developed and he was 61 when his research and development career caught up to him; a stint working at the Hinobi-Aperture Research Center with Tiberium Ore PLixels, asbestos-powered tractor beam pipes, and those little purple mushrooms that take away a 1-Up in the early 1980s shortly before retirement led to him developing cancer later in life.
