The continent of Cimmerian is where Nightfall hunter takes place. A vast land with a dark history that led to the rise of vampires as the dominant species.
Major races
Various races have territories scattered all over Cimmerian as past raids and power struggles continuously shift boundaries. With the growing threat of vampires, most interracial conflicts have given way to partnerships and truces to join forces against a common enemy. Among the most established and powerful races are the following:
Humans:
Various kingdoms and empires exist that are governed by humans. These are spread out and differ widely in culture and religion. Humans remain at the forefront in the war against vampires as they founded the Vampire hunter association — a continent-wide organization that trains and deploys vampire hunters. The Nightfall Hunter society was also cofounded by a human although the society is seen as a myth.
Over the centuries, humans have developed countless weapons and technology that make them formidable opponents for not only vampires, but all other races.
Elves:
Elves have the most organized societies in Cimmerian, with wood elves owning an entire geographical region and the winged elves having a country. Their expert use of magic and vast knowledge of nature are important tools in the fight against vampires.
High elves favour all sorts of environments and have small settlements in all regions, blending seamlessly with nature and its spirits. Dark elves rule the subterranean plane along with dwarves an miners and are invaluable in the extraction of raw materials used in making weapons of all sorts. Wood elves call the North central region's dense forests home and fiercely guard it from monsters and intruders not allied with humans. Winged elves populate the froze mountains in the northwest country of Thalendriel and are both formidable warriors and expert scouts.
Their partnership with humans is one of friendship with mutual benefit and both races regularly visit each other.
Dwarves:
Wherever there are mountains, there will be dwarves. Their scattered territories typically consist of a single clan with a few families. They are skilled craftsmen and miners whose lifespan gives them a wealth of experience and philosophical knowledge.
They generally don't get along with humans and wood elves due to past tensions.
Minor, less populated races include:
Ogres: Powerful creatures who avoid partnership but also conflict.
Orcs: Once vastly powerful and feared by all, orcs live a quiet life as slaves to powerful vampires.
Goblins: These creatures of the night travel in small groups and are frequently hunted by wood elves. They scavenge what they can and don't hesitate to attack travelers.
Ghouls: Creatures born of necromancy who crave nothing but the flesh of the living and will serve vampires without question as long as it rewards their appetite.
Mutants: Genetic abominations created by humans during past wars. They feature malformed but highly functional bodies of many different creatures or even a mix of them. Most are failed experiments that were released into the wild when laboratories were captured or destroyed.
Fae: Very secretive creatures of magic related to elves. Their magic is especially potent as its effects can last centuries.
Nature spirits: Spirits born of nature's essence. They are some of the oldest and most powerful creatures with most only existing in myths or serving as gods.
