Ails
Ails are the toll the world takes on your mind and body, wounds you carry, whether anyone sees them or not. They come in two types: Mental and Physical, and each one puts the hurt on your rolls, stacking as things get worse.
Mental conditions - affect Spirit and Cunning rolls.
Riled
Your blood's up. You ain't thinking straight, more punch than plan.
Effect: You take a -1 dice penalty to all Spirit and Cunning rolls.
Spooked
Something’s put the fear in you. Hands shake, heart pounds, instincts scream "Run!"
Effect: You take a -2 dice penalty to all Spirit and Cunning rolls.
Gone to seed
Hope’s dried up. You’re just going through the motions, a shadow of yourself.
Effect: You take a -3 dice penalty to all Spirit and Cunning rolls.
Physical conditions - affect Reflexes and Brawn rolls.
Dog-tired
You're plumb wore out. Muscles ache, feet drag, breath comes short.
Effect: You take a -1 dice penalty to all Brawn and Reflexes-based rolls.
Bruised up
You're in the thick of it, bruises, cuts, maybe a cracked rib.
Effect: You take a -2 dice penalty to all Brawn and Reflexes-based rolls.
Gutshot
You’re bleeding or otherwise badly hurt. Could be the end if you don't patch up.
Effect: You take a -3 dice penalty to all Brawn and Reflexes-based rolls.
If you suffer all Ails of one type and take another, you become Broken and can’t continue without someone else performing a successful Read'em or Patch-up roll on you.
Treating critical injuries
When you have sustained a critical injury that might either kill you or become chronic, someone must treat you with Read'em or Patch Up before the time limit expires. If it succeeds, you cease to be Broken, while retaining all other Ails. Extra successes
can be used to heal additional Ails.
If the attempt fails, the person treating you must either find help, gather more medical supplies, or move you to a safer location before she can try again.
If no one has successfully treated you before the time runs out, you either die or become permanently Broken. Then it is time to create a new player character.
Healing Ails
You can use Read'em to cure others of their mental Ails. In addition to spending a day, and having access to a safe place, food, and beverages, your friends must willingly engage in close contact and dialogue with you.
Likewise, you can use Patch Up to heal other people’s physical Ails after exhausting, but not your own. You and your patients must spend a full day on treatment, in a secure location where you can drink, eat, and rest. You cannot do anything else that day
If the skill test succeeds, your patients heal a total of three Ails which you distribute between them. They decide which Ails are healed.
Broken can also be healed this way. Each extra success can be used to heal another three Ails.
A failed skill test usually means that a day has been wasted, and may also give an enemy time to take further action against the characters.
