Just outside town where SR519 passes by on its way between the I90 and the Port of Seattle, there is a turn known locally as Immelmann's Turn although officially it has no name.
Most people don't know who Immelmann was or why the turn's named after him, only that it's the worst accident blackspot West of the Rocky's On average fourteen people are killed in road accidents every year, usually trough one or both cars involved in a collision being launched into the air and crashing down violently.
The truth is, it was named after World War One German air ace Max Immelmann who also gave his name to the Immelmann Turn, used by fighter pilots worldwide to attempt to get a second shot at an aircraft they just shot at, and the 'Blue Max' a medal issued by the German Airforce.
Nobody remembers who gave the turn its name but whoever it was, it was a sick joke, but one so obscure that nobody realises it... at least not until they learn to use Google.
