Gestalt Levels are the primary way to advance a character.
An Attribute Bonus number of Gestalt Levels buys a 1d3 increase in the base Attribute. Example, raising a 35 Strength would cost 3 Gestalt Levels and raise it to 36-38.
A new Ability costs 5 - Attribute Bonus Gestalt Levels. Example, if someone with 35 Strength wants Switch Hitter it would cost 2 Gestalt Levels.
Increasing the Rank of an Ability costs the next level in Gestalt Levels. Example, raising Switch Hitter 2 to rank 3 costs 3 Gestalt Levels.
Special Gestalt Abilities cost 1-5 and vary on utility.
Raising a Skills costs 1 Gestalt Level and each skill may be raised 5 times. Each raise adds any advancement bonus from Abilities. It also adds as follows based on the difficulty of the skill.

Trained Skill, Unsupported 1d3
Trained Skill, Supported 1d5
Trained Skill, Specialized roll 2d5 keep the highest
Expert Skill, Unsupported 0
