The oldest state within South Kalatoria. Records of it's genesis have been lost, or were perhaps never recorded. General consensus states that Sedoria is perhaps 400 years old, though little evidence supports this claim.
One such rare piece of 'evidence' is that the Sedorian calendar stretches back only 400 years. The current year is 412 AV (Ader's Voyage), and this calendar is used all across Kalatoria. As of this year, the population of the Republic is about 245 000.
The majority of folk in the Republic are ethnically Jakadi.
Within the Republic of Sedoria, architecture and philosophy are abundant. Public works are omnipresent, and appointed councils of technocrats, plutocrats and stratocrats run each Polis. The chancellors in these councils each elect one Head Chancellor to act as the representative of their Polis, within the greater republic
Standing above the political and economic entity that is the Myriad Councils, are the nation-spanning and centralized Temples.
Each Temple serves a different God, and fulfills different roles. The Temples conflict with one another often over jurisdiction, but outright infighting is unheard of.
The prime deity of Sedorian religion and society is called Ader, who represents ambition and nation-building. He is also one of the oldest gods, and often considered the father of the pantheon by scholastics. His Temple is the Supreme Temple, which has authority over all other Temples.
The Republic of Sedoria has been at constant war with the Kingdom of Ghanbar, since the latter's founding 130 years ago.
Known Gods:
- Ader - the chief God of the Sedorian religion. His 'Eye' resides in the Supreme Temple...
- Ad'Legon - a god with a profound doctrine that many consider terrible. His followers are considered maniacs, even amongst the Sedorians.
- Ad'Basdetagon - A war god depicted as chimeric man with three beast heads, and eight arms. He is often described as having a fiery aura. His followers act as warriors, law enforcement, mercenary guards, and other combat roles. His three heads are thusly: One of a lion, one of a skinned hound, and one of a grey drake
- Ad'Ilnurimyt - Depicted as a gaunt and gangly man with greyish skin ritually scarred with near-black markings. In religious art, he is adorned in occult garments comprised of heavy, trailing robes and an unsettling headdress that covers his eyes. Legends say he wears heavy robes to cover his disfigured body, and a gaping hole in his chest - where his heart was crushed for disobeying Ader. His adherents are religious scholars and academics of many fields.
- Lady with Lily-Eyes - Mysterious, enigmatic and disturbing entity served by the Silent Sisters. She is depicted as an expressionless woman carrying a strange, symbolic sword. Her defining feature is that she has pink lily flowers where her eyes should be
Settlements
- Aderun - Sometimes called the 'Heart of The World'. Home of the Supreme Temple.
- Legoniad - The polis where the Temple of Legon stands. It is not a heavily populated city, and its Council is minimal. It serves mainly as a military base for the Legonites.
Legal System
Priests of the different gods are responsible for ensuring crime is kept low across the cities while council members need to make sure the specific laws of the Polis are suited for its needs.
Thus, crimes usually take one of three forms in Sedoria:
- Crimes of any significance between two parties are considered interpersonal affairs and are handled by junior priests of the closest temple. Penalties are determined by the code of the God they serve, but what's considered a crime doesn't change depending on who's arbitering.
- In cases where someone commits a crime then flees the Polis where the local council/temple branch is located, an Executor (a special class of priest) might be sent out from that temple's headquarters. You do not want this to happen to you. Because when they find you, the punishment is always death. If you commit further crimes during your escape, it might not be a quick and merciful one, either. Depending on the God whose agent you've angered and how long they had to search for you, you might face years of torture in the cellar of some temple somewhere.
- Economic disputes other than petty theft are usually handled by the council. If the incident involves multiple Poles, any involved will have representation by the their council.
- Crimes against council members by other council members are usually handled internally before a priest is brought in only to certify the resulting decision.
Lore - Miscellaneous
The Gods of Sedoria have a mysterious enemy known as the "Dark Ones" or "The Forbidden"...
The Chariot of Peerless Travel - a divine artifact of the Eye of Ader. It grants the rider a restful sleep, and can travel anywhere in the continent in a single day.
