In general combat, a player does NOT need to make a check to perform an unresisted maneuver in which the character is proficient.
- IF the target gets to resist, as in a shove, the player makes the check like an attack roll, using the target’s passive physical or mental defense as appropriate.
- IF the character is not proficient, the player has to make the ability check against DC 10 for most movement maneuvers. For complicated or objectively difficult maneuvers, the DC is 15.
- IF failing the check has interesting consequences, like falling into a bottomless chasm or stepping in hot lava, the player should make the check.
Note: Characters failing a simple jump or tumble check is NOT interesting—those are basic heroic feats a character should be able to pull off simply because ze has the skill.
