| This spell creates a visual illusion which is real to those viewing it, as long as the wizard maintains concentration (i.e., does nothing else but move at half speed and speak). The illusion persists until struck by an opponent-unless the spellcaster causes the illusion to react appropriately-or until the wizard ceases to concentrate upon maintaining the spell. Creatures that disbelieve the illusion see it for what it is and are unaffected by it. Creatures within the area of effect are allowed a saving throw; if successful, they see the phantasm for what it is. Creatures outside the area of effect must move into it and attempt a saving throw to see the phantasm. The illusion can be of any object, creature, or force, as long as it is within the boundaries of the area of effect. The illusion does not create sound, smell, or temperature. It is not effective against creatures that do not rely on sight. If the illusion is crafted to be within the viewer’s experience and is not unbelievable (e.g., an ogre attacking), the spell works normally. If the viewer attempts to touch the phantasm, it vanishes if the touch causes damage or if the viewer makes a successful saving throw. Note that the caster can maintain only one phantasmal force at a time; if a second is cast, the first one is automatically dispelled. The DM must adjudicate the effectiveness of any illusion created with this spell. Extremely detailed illusions can fool creatures and cause damage if believed real—such as creating the illusion of a pit, which causes viewers to believe they are falling, potentially suffering damage. | |||
