THE NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE AND DYING

Dying in the game is a real possibility.  It happens.  The GM hopes, players understand this fact, and do not become so emotionally attached to a character that death causes them to "rage quit" the game entirely.  It has happened time to time.   It is sad to me, and disappointing, to see a player leave because of a character death. To this end, I make it a bit more difficult to die with exception to a massive amount of damage that outright kills a character reaching below -10 hitpoints.

There is a mechanic in the game to allow a character to remain conscious when zero or below hit points happens.  I do not like the "if you reach zero hit points you are dead" rule.  I like a little more drama... hence, when you reach zero or below, you are "dying".  You will die, unless something happens to save you.

Make a roll against your CON.  Success, you do not lose a point of damage in the next ten seconds and may be able to save yourself.   Yell for help perhaps?  ANY other action other than yelling or speaking will require a roll for success using an appropriate attribute score.  Slug down a potion of healing? Unless it was in your hands already, make a DEX roll to retrieve it. Put pressure on that wound to stabilize?  Make a Strength roll to do it (progressively harder each round as you weaken). If a roll on an attribute score to save yourself fails, you will have to try again next round with a harder roll, such as INT-1, and so on.  Most of you have pretty high attribute scores, so chances are you will be able to save yourself.  Nothing saves you from a massive amount of damage reducing you below -10.

Failure on the CON roll and you lose consciousness this round and another hit point next round. Once unconscious, only luck of the rolls will extend your life, maybe long enough for help to arrive. At -10 you are dead.

Next round a roll against your constitution minus one (CON-1) is made.  Success means you do not lose a point.  Failure and you do.

And so on....  each round the character's constitution gets weaker and weaker, making it harder to stay alive.
