Spellweaving
It’s not, strictly speaking, entirely accurate to say that you can’t extend a spell without using Quickening. A related but advanced technique in quickening is the spellweave, a process that imbues an item with a spell or magical effect.
Spellweavers can cast magic into an item they craft, ty- ing the spell to the item's soul in the same way a quickened spell is linked to the mind of the caster. In this way, they can make charms and glamours that allow the holder to cast a spell once; or wands, rods, or staves that let the holder cast a spell repeatedly. They can also make a cloak that protects its wearer, weapons that blaze with fire or that prickle with lightning, robes that grant their wearers the power of flight, and such wonders.
Mechanically, spellweaving is simpler than quickening a spell, but takes longer. The caster holds the spell while ze’s making the item to receive the magic. Ze can limit the spell or effect to single-use or to a given duration, or ze can make the magic last until the item is destroyed. Ze can graft the Targets form to create items with multiple castings of the same spell. In any case, the caster does not suffer any trauma or have to concentrate to maintain the spell after the item is created.
There’s a downside to spellweaving that makes some wizards reluctant to use it, however. Any magic item a wizard crafts can be used to track hir with a divining spell, as if it were a material component of the caster. Talismongers choose to live with this complication, of course, but many wizards dislike the idea of someone tracking them through the items they create.
