Every player character begins with a single secret they want to avoid anyone finding out about. The player can create their own secre to allow the GM to assign them one. They may accumulate more secrets during game play, up to a maximum of 3.
Avoiding Exposure
Every pivotal scene that a character risks exposure to one of their secrets through no fault of their own but successfully avoids the exposure, they gain +1 surge.
Exposing a Secret
Each time a secret is exposed to a small handful of NPCs who don't actively attempt to publicly expose the character, the character suffers 1 exposure and puts a mark in one of the secret's exposure boxes. If the secret is revealed to a large group of NPCs or to an NPC that actively seeks to expose it to the public and has the means to do so, you check two boxes instead. If all three exposure boxes are checked, you lose the secret, it becomes public knowledge among those who know the character (even if only by reputation), and the character gains a number of temporary surges equal to half their level (their choice). A character can always choose to out themselves and publicly expose their own secret (often during battle or other dramatic moments). If you lose a secret due to exposure, you cannot acquire a new one until the start of the next session.
End of Sessions
At the end of every session in which a secret was threatened but none exposed, you get +1 XP per secret protected (max 3).
