Saving Throw
A "saving throw" is a d20 rolls a character makes to resist or negate an effect that is typically magical or harmful in nature. When a character is subjected to an effect, such as a spell or poison, they roll a twenty-sided die (d20) and add any relevant modifiers, usually derived from their attributes or proficiency.
For example, if a character is targeted by a spell that requires a Dexterity saving throw, they would roll a d20, add their Dexterity modifier, and compare the total to a Difficulty Class (DC) set by the spellcaster. If their total meets or exceeds the DC, they successfully avoid or lessen the effect of the spell. Conversely, if they fail, they might suffer the full consequences of the attack. This mechanic emphasizes strategic decision-making and character abilities, enhancing the gameplay experience.
Each attribute has a saving throw associated with it which gains a proficiency bonus just as skills do. See Proficiency and Advancement for more details.
