Proficiency
All of a character's defenses and skills have a proficiency rank on a scale of 1 to 6. Each rank has an associated bonus that goes to all Difficulty Ratings and Rolls associated with the defense or skill as listed below:
- untrained (+0) - any level
- trained (+2) - any level
- versed (+4) - requires 3rd level
- expert (+6) - requires 8th level
- master (+8) - requires 13th level
- legendary (+10) - requires 18th level
Starting Proficiencies
At 1st level, your character begins trained in (5 + their Intelligence modifier) skills and 3 saving throws of your choice: Strength, Constitution, Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma. This increases retroactively if their Intelligence increases later.
Even Levels
At every even level (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.), you can increase one of your character's proficiency rank by 1 in a single skill of your choice up to the normal maximum. They all begin as untrained (+0) and increasing this by 1 rank increases it to trained (+2).
Odd Levels
At every odd level after 1st (3rd, 5th, 7th, etc.), you can increase one of your character's proficiency rank by 1 in a single saving throw of your choice up to the normal maximum. They all begin as untrained (+0) and increasing this by 1 rank increases it to trained (+2).
Maximum Proficiency
The maximum proficiency a character can have is trained (+2). This maximum increases to versed (+4) at 3rd level, expert (+6) at 8th level, master (+8) at 13th level, and legendary (+10) at 18th level.
