A difficulty rating (DR) is a number you must meet or exceed with a die roll in order to affect a target. You roll 1d20 and add any relevant bonuses and penalties relevant to the action and skill or defense being used. If the total result of the die roll with the modifiers added equals or exceeds the DR, then you succeed at the task, otherwise, you fail. Success and failure are usually split into four categories: critical success, success, failure, critical failure. If your result is 10 points below the DR or lower, it's a critical failure rather than a regular failure. If it's 10 points above the DR or higher, it's a critical success rather than a regular success.
