Surges
Hero points, mythic power, and mythic surges have been removed from the game and replaced by a pool of surges. You can expend a surge to do any of the following:
- Use mythic abilities spending surges instead of mythic power
- Reroll a d20 roll you just made, keeping the second result even if it’s lower.
- Add a bonus to a d20 roll. (1d12 if declared before rolling, 1d6 if declared after rolling)
- Take an extra action or reaction.
- Introduce a minor complication or benefit to a scene such as an NPC, item, or effect, scaled up to half your level at GM discretion so long as it makes sense for the circumstances. A GM may allow you to spend 2 or more surges to create even higher level things (costing 1 additional surge per 2 levels above this limit).
*You can only spend up to 1 + 1/5th (level) surges per round
GAINING SURGES
You gain 1 surge:
- At the start of every gaming session.
- When you get an achievement for an aspiration.
- When you fulfill a motivation.
- At the end of every pivotal event with a CR equal to APL+1 or greater.*
The maximum number of surges you can have at a time is half your level (rounded up).
DESPERATE MEASURES
At any time you can choose to lose XP and immediately gain a number of temporary surges equal to the XP sacrificed. If you don’t currently have any XP to spend, this can put your pool into the negatives (down to the negative value of your max surge pool), allowing you to pay it off later but you can’t use this effect while already in the negatives. For example, if you were level 5, your max surge pool would be 3 and so the furthest negative surges you could go would be -3.
EXTREME EFFORT
Before rolling, you can spend a surge and perform any activity using twice the normal needed amount of actions or time. When you do so, you roll the action with advantage and also grant 1d12 bonus to the roll. If you fail, you lose hit points and mana points equal to your level and try again with a new roll, keeping the new roll even if it's worse.
SURGE OVERFLOW
Any time a character would earn a surge while they are full on surges, they gain a temporary surge instead.
Your limit on temporary surges is the same as your normal surges, except temporary surges last only until the end of the current scene, 10 minutes, or until expended, whichever occurs first.
