Specialties

Rather than train a skill, a character can create up to three specialties (A GM can authorize more if they wish but the default limit is 3). A specialty functions like a skill except only in niche circumstances. The character selects 3 existing skills and declares a specific type of use between them that makes sense as a craft, expertise, profession, or trade. This requires approval from the GM. Once the specialty is created, the character can use their specialty skill in place of any of the designated 3 skills but only when the niche circumstances they listed apply. The circumstance should be something that comes up roughly 25% of the time or less in the campaign. Anything that occurs more frequently, should not be made into a specialty.

Example:
Tammy Booker really likes horseback riding and wants to be good at working with horses. She makes "Horsewhispering" a specialty and selects Eminence, Nature, and Piloting as the applicable skills. Whenever they would make an Eminence roll to calm or train horses, a Nature roll to know or learn something about horses, or a Piloting roll to control or ride a horse, they can use this specialty skill instead. She would not be able to use this skill when attempting to appraise horses for sale because she did not select Civilization as part of the skills. However, she could make a second specialty called "Horsemastery" and select Civilization, Medicine, and Performance allowing her to apply this skill instead of the selected skill for those as well. She could even make a third skill allowing her to replace 9 possible skills with only 3, though she'd be limited to their use only when working with horses.

Likewise, a warrior who specializes in swords could make a "Swordsmanship" specialty and apply Finesse, Guard, and Melee or "Swordsmithing" with even Alchemy, Civilization, and Mechanics if he wanted to be good at crafting and appraising and selling swords as well.

Another character might be a computer whiz who is like a digital superhero while they're online. They could make a specialty called "Digital Warrior" and select Acrobatics, Athletics, and Melee so that their digital avatars use this skill in place of those skills whenever they're in cyberspace.
