Naga

Naga were spirit creatures originating in the part of the Netherworld known as Patala. However, many naga were fascinated with mortals and continually sought to be more involved in the mortal world, eventually learning to take humanoid forms. Naga who stayed in the mortal realm too long eventually became mortals, reproducing with other mortal nagas and becoming a mortal race. Those that stayed behind in the spirit realms became known as Nagaraja (naga kings), naga yakshi (serpent nature spirit), and the naga kanyaka (serpent nature damsel), as they remain immortal spirits in Patala. Despite being mortal, the Naga see the spirit nagas as their leaders and take orders from them across the boundaries of the planes. Their three kings are Sesha, Vasuki, and Takshaka and presiding over these three kings is their serpent god emperor Virupaksa who claims the title as one of the Four Heavenly Kings or "Devas" who preside over the Cardinal Directions. Virupaksa being the King of the West despite the Naga residing in the North Eastern hemisphere. Virupaksa is said to often travel in the west and be known by many names, including "Quetzalcoatl".
