Muspelheim

Norse cosmology describes Muspelheim (Old Norse: Múspellsheimr), also called Muspell, as a primordial realm of intense heat and flame. Its name may derive from a term meaning “world-destroyers” or “wreck of the world,” though the exact origin is uncertain. Muspelheim is depicted as a blazing land inhabited by fire giants and ruled by Surtr, who wields a radiant, flaming sword.

This realm plays a crucial role in both the creation and destruction of the cosmos. Before the world existed, the icy realm of Niflheim produced freezing rivers whose hardened ice spread into the void known as Ginnungagap. Meanwhile, sparks and heat from Muspelheim filled the southern region of this void. When fire met ice, the ice melted, and from these life-giving drops emerged the first being, Ymir, ancestor of the frost giants. The sparks themselves became the sun, moon, and stars.

Muspelheim also features prominently in the apocalyptic events of Ragnarök. According to the Prose Edda, the sons of Muspell, led by Surtr, will ride forth across the sky, shattering the rainbow bridge, Bifröst, and advancing to the battlefield of Vígríðr. There, they will stand apart as a blazing host, signaling the final destruction and renewal of the world.
