Factions
There are many nations and organizations throughout Aether Spira, often with various alliances, truces, rivalries, and competing interests. If you develop influence with three NPCs within the same organization that themselves have some influence, you can merge those influences into a single influence over the entire organization (see Influences). If you gain influence over organizations, cities, nations, etc. that are allies or neutral to each other, there are no problems. However, should influences enter hostilities with each other, your influence over both are constantly threatened and drop with one every time you help the other.
Some players may resort to alternate identities or other forms of secrecy and deception to keep their influences from competing. Others may resort to diplomacy to deescalate conflicts while others may attempt to use fear and coercion. Some may even attempt to conquer an organization and take over it entirely, thus allowing them to determine alliances and truces with other organizations. Rapid and overwhelming changes in an organization often cut its resources and reach in half, in cases of a coup or similar circumstances, so doing so isn't always in the best interests of the player with the influence. Leading an organization also requires a lot of upkeep which can interfere with adventuring. Neglect of an organization often just leads to more coups too.
