The Necrotheon Thanarchy is called many names that suggest it is only a wasteland: the Deadlands, the Dead Empire, Land of Bones, etc. but it was once a thriving kingdom. Long ago, the terrifying necromancer known as the Lich Lord took over a kingdom and created a massive army of undead, seeking to plunge the world into an undead waking nightmare. So devastating was the lich lord's power, that it killed the very land upon which his army resided. The animals, the plants, even the soil and water perished into poisonous lifeless decay. Nothing grew and anyone and anything that entered the land grew sickly and weak. Drinking the from the lakes was poisonous and deadly. So full of necrotic energy was the land, that any creature that perished within its borders rose as a mindless undead. Not a single bone was left undisturbed as the an entire country turned into an eternal horror.
A group of the Lich Lord's followers made a deal to betray their master and aid a party of heroes in defeating the Lich Lord. However, the damage was already done, and the land that he'd already conquered was forever cursed, now referred to pejoratively as the Deadlands. All the heroes save one were slain in the battle, leaving the lich's traitorous disciples to clean up the mess they'd helped create. They made a deal with the neighboring kingdoms and agreed to continue to keep the wandering mindless undead within the borders of the Deadlands so that the rot would not spread. In exchange for this service, the necromancers were granted autonomy and their neighbors swore not to meddle in their affairs, functioning as a new nation comprised solely of undead.
The palace in which the council of necromancers rule is known now as the Necropolis, and serves as a seat of power. Those who dwell in the Deadlands are either necromancers or undead (or both) and it survives on a dark and twisted economy of corpses and magic. The Deadlands serves as a harsh reminder of the dangers of unleashing ancient magic upon the world.
