The Wayfarer caters to weary travelers looking for a cheap, safe place to rest their bones for a night. It is located two blocks south of Main Street in the easternmost part of Narwell. The building is a simple hardwood A-frame structure consisting of four bedrooms capable of sleeping up to 11 guests (eight on the main floor and three in the attic loft.)
Two of the rooms are private and rent for a gold piece. The third room is public and contains four bunks that rent for two silvers each. The loft area has no beds but the floor is covered with hay. One night costs five coppers. All of the accommodations are spare but clean and comfortable. Even the hay.

The owner is a plump, elderly widow called Mrs. Pemberton. She is fairly friendly but also a no-nonsense person who measures her words carefully before she speaks. Her grown son, Herdeg, is a massive man who wears a club on his belt and seems never to speak at all. He assists his mother in running the inn and handles a variety of duties, including security.
In addition to the guest rooms there is a common area at the front of the building with one table, four chairs, and a rocker where Mrs. Pemberton sits and needlepoints when she’s not otherwise preoccupied. There is a small kitchen/storage area where she keeps a supply of basic wares such as tea, cheese, and bread. There is also an extra bedroom that she and her son appear to share.
The front door is unlocked during the day, but it is bolted and barred after sun down. There is a bell that can be rung to gain the proprietors’ attention after hours if needed, but there’s a sign next to it that says, “Use Wisely!”

A beggar boy approaches Llewen as he walks along Main Street, and in return for a copper, the boy recommends The Wayfarer as a place that is "cheap, but clean and safe." He follows the boy's directions and arrives at the front door at sunset, just as Mrs. Pemberton is preparing to lock up.
"Greetings Mum," he says, in a hopeful voice.
