South Street Market

Named for its location, the South Street Market is a collection of three dozen stalls and tents in an open area along South Street not far from the Militia Headquarters.  Although there are signs that the location is going to be covered, work has only just begun on that project, leaving the stalls out in the open for now.

The market is one of many money-generating endeavours in Narwell for the Baron.  Rent is paid weekly on the stalls and a cut of the profits also go to the Baron, who provides space and security for the merchants here.  At least two guards are stationed at the market at all times.

The market contains a wide variety of goods, although the merchants and selection can vary from week to week and some are seasonal.  A number of food stalls can be found here, mostly shared by local farmers who each get one day a week.  The market is open during daylight hours, although some merchants have shorter hours.

-----

Astrid wanders into the South Street market early in the day before a lot of the normal crowds arrive.  She is looking for a few items that might come in handy if working in a group and she also needs to get some soap, as she is almost out.

She strolls through the stalls, looking at the merchandise, as well as always watching the crowd.  She keeps an especial eye out for the two guards who patrol here day and night.  The day crew are a human male named Joseph and a female half-elf named Ysgrith.  She spots Joseph over by Fresh Buns but no sign of Ysgrith yet.  At night, a male elf named Trilowyn and a female half-orc named Hrottle patrol the place.  Sometimes they bring in others, and even an undercover snoop occasionally.

Passing Armor All, Astrid spots Ysgrith near Gorluck's Leather.  It seems like there is just the pair this morning.  Not a surprise as it is not usually a busy day at the market.  Astrid continues walking until she comes to Eloise Parfumerie.  She chats with Eloise in Elvish while she smells a few of the perfumes, wishing idly that she could afford such an indulgence.  Instead, she simply purchases some soap to replenish her supply.

Astrid could probably just steal the things she needs but she tends to avoid robbing businesses, especially ones with guards that pay for protection from the Baron.  Much easier to roll a few drunks or take advantage of the unwary at the gaming tables.

Continuing her rounds, she makes her way to Scout's Honor and trades a few barbs with Filch as she peruses his stock.  Some charcoal or chalk could be useful, she thinks to herself.  Eventually deciding chalk is probably easier to see, she takes three sticks of it.  She checks out the dice but doesn't like the weight.  The last thing she wants is someone claiming the dice are rigged, and dice are more about luck anyway.  Instead, she takes a deck of cards and riffles through them to make sure the deck is complete and not marked.  She spends about five minutes haggling with Filch just to get to standard rates and manages to get him to throw in some string for free.

Astrid puts away her purchases and meanders through the rest of the market.  She likes to keep track of who is selling and what they have for sale.  She is also always looking for marks who might be unknowingly willing to provide her with a night's lodging or a meal.
