Marta's Melons

Proprietor: Marta

Widowed only a few years ago, Marta and her children live on a modest farm not too far from the walls of Narwall.  Her stall is a fixture in Narwall's market and while she sells a variety of produce from the farm throughout the year, she is most known for her melons.  Usually she brings her youngest and one of her teenage boys along to run the stall on market days.

While she is still considered a comely woman, she is not interested in remarriage.  At least not until her oldest son comes of age in a few years and can run the farm himself (hopefully after he finds a wife of his own).  Until then she is content to raise her family by herself and watch her boys grow into strong young men.

Arriving in the market, Ageon's almond shaped eyes grew larger in excitement as he scanned the available stalls.  There wasn't anything here that he hadn't seen thousands of times before but he loved the ebb and flow of commerce.  Other elves could wax poetic about babbling brooks under the shade of ancient trees they watched grow from saplings, but it didn't compare to the possibilities waiting to be found even in an average market.

The elf started to walk the circuit around the market, looking at stalls.  Wine sellers, grocers, cheesemongers, some finished goods...

He stopped at a produce stand with a fine display of fine looking melons proudly set up out front.  A towheaded human boy, no teenager given his broader shoulders, was unloading a well used cart strategically placing other summer fruits and vegetables around the stand.  A much younger girl, obviously the boy's sister, was sitting on a tall stool keeping an eagle eye on their goods.

The pair's obvious mother, a buxom well-built woman, finished up a transaction with another customer with a smile and laugh when she turned to Ageon.  He saw her blue eyes flick over his long bow, long sword, and heavy backpack as she said, "Perhaps a refreshing melon after your travels?  The best around Naer's Well, you won't find any sweeter or juicier."

Feigning disinterest Ageon tapped one of the lovely green melons listening as he scanned the goods.  Making a selection he asks, "How much for this melon and those three tomatoes?"

"A silver noble and four copper commons."

Ageon pursed his lips, "I could get a fine cooked meal for that..."

"My melons are a meal alone, none finer," she parried.

Ageon countered, "Throw in two more tomatoes and a head of lettuce and you have a deal"

"Four tomatoes and I pick the head."

Scanning the lettuce on offer, Ageon shrugged.  It all looked good, especially after days of trail rations, "Done."

Exchanging coins and goods, Ageon packed it away.  He needed to add to his meager supply of coins soon.  He returned to walking the circuit around the market and look for opportunities.
