City Botanical Gardens
This expanse of plant life, centered around a large gazebo, is maintained by the city for the enjoyment of the citizens. Located just inside the Wharfgate, the gardens cover a series of gently sloping hillsides, offering a variety of panoramic views over all regions of the city.
The gardens include small groves of unusual trees, plots of brilliant blossoms, and bushes and shrubs trimmed into hedges and topiaries. Pleasing walking trails of crushed gravel meander through the gardens, offering a selection of short or long paths.
The gazebo is centered around a small spring, which collects in a concrete pool within the structure. The water then trickles along several different drainage paths, over miniature water falls, even turning small water wheels beside model mill ponds. The gardens are indeed an idyllic setting for thought, meditation, and quiet conversation.
Temple to Corellon Larethian
The temple to Corellon Larethian is simple, a tiny, delicate staircase suspended from elven rope circles it's way up the trunk of the relatively small Usk tree to a height of fifteen feet, each of the steps a work of art, carved from Roanwood telling the story of the Elven race and of Corellon Larethian. At the top of the steps there is a sturdy landing made of Bronzewood, five feet wide encircling the tree. There, carved into the trunk are wooden reliefs of the Elven dieties, each one the height of an adult elf. They are painted and gilded. With the Usk tree's branches and leaves shielding it from casual view it would be easy to miss. It is here that Curate Larren Argentillium sees to keeping the Elven faith alive in Greyhawk.
Larren is tall, slender, dressed in robes of sky blue and gold. His hair is white and hangs loosely to the center of his back. He appears elven, but there might just be a trace of human blood there too. His age is difficult to tell, like most of those of sylvan descent, but his grey eyes hold wisdom.
For those unfamiliar, the trees and woods are desribed here:
USK:
Usk trees are very thick, tall hardwoods with huge oblong leaves and an edible fruit which is loved by most creatures. Typical specimens of usk are 8 to 9 feet in diameter and 50 to 60 feet tall. The tree is similar to a maple in shape. The huge leaves are tough and flexible, so they can be used for many purposes. Uskfruit appears in early summer and stays until frost. It is pale blue with three or four lobes. A ripe uskfruit is about the size of a large grapefruit, bright blue, and aromatic.
ROANWOOD:
These trees are similar to sequoias, except that the branches are closer to the ground (30' or so) and far larger, for the roanwood is a hardwood. As the name implies, the bark of the trees is a speckled grey and reddish-brown. Specimens over 150 ft. tall have been reported. Roanwoods have fan-shaped leaves about 1 ft. long. The wood and grain of the trees are such that it is used for fine furniture, interiors, or carving. Where hardness and strength are desired, hickory, bronzewood, oak and like woods are typically used.
BRONZEWOOD:
These trees are slender until after many decades of growth. The average size is 40 ft. with branches growing at 45 degree angles from the trunk. The bark is a reddish-brown and hard. Leaves are narrow and toothed, from eight to ten inches long. The wood of this tree is heavy and hard, so that only experts can work it properly. If it is carefully seasoned and especially dried, the outer part will become as hard as metal, while the overall weight of the wood is unchanged.
