Burrow Heights

This is perhaps the most unique neighbourhood in the Free City, in that all of its buildings consist of holes in the ground.  It is quite popular with the city's dwarven and halfling residents, as well as those humans who have spent perhaps a trifle too much time away from the light of the sun.

The Burrow Heights is an area within the Foreign District, set aside for Demi-Humans who are not citizens or otherwise prominent and integrated members of the Free City of Greyhawk society. It is home to the full-time resident Dwarves, Halflings, Gnomes, and similar humanoid creatures who prefer underground and earthen structures in which to live. By far, the Dwarven and Halfling populations make up the bulk of the residents in the Heights.

The Dwarven quarter of Burrow Heights is ethnically and practically separate from the Halfling quarter. The Halflings prefer earthen structures that have windows, sunlight, fresh air, and some access to the world above, including gardens on and around each Halfling hole. The Dwarves, on the other hand, prefer rock and stone carved out dwellings that are accessible from ground level (with shafts carved out to the surface to provide fresh air and sporadic sunlight and rain water), but the complex is carved out much deeper than the Halfling abodes. Within the confines of Burrow Heights, this arrangement works out well. The Halflings quarter occupies much of the ground level and upper hills of the Heights; the Dwarven quarter is below the Halfling quarter and is much deeper and more expansive than most residents of the Free City could have known or suspected.

The underground structure of the Dwarven quarter is actually quite impressive, even though it is home to only about 150 Dwarves, at any given time, within the confines of the Free City of Greyhawk.  While most of the Dwarven quarter was built for residential purposes, there are several common areas, actually halls, for larger gatherings and communal purposes. Of these, the main hall is centrally-located within the enclave and includes shared dining and drinking areas, Dwarven-only markets, a small forge, a jewelers and stone cutting and appraisal area, and a temple area.
