From within, the smell of roasted pork wafted temptingly as the wagons and animals were seen to for the night.  The guard captain served as paymaster for the caravan as well.  While others were busy with their duties he pulled Valenthia aside and pressed a small square of cloth into Valenthia’s palm and whispered, “Don’t go crowing about this.  Most don’t get paid this much, nor on a daily basis.”  Inside the cloth, Valenthia could feel the five coins.  She put them into the pouch on her belt and nodded her understanding.

After checking to see that none needed healing, Valenthia went inside and ordered a plain supper.  Pork stew with brown bread.  It had bits of meat, but more root vegetables and soaked grains than anything else.  Satisfying and nutritious, but meant for the bellies of poor, hardworking folk.  With it she ordered a mug of honeyed mead, which at an electrum piece cost more than twice what her 3 sp meal did.  It was her big indulgence and she savored it, sipping sparingly.  She secured herself some dormitory style sleeping arrangements for another silver piece, a pallet in the common room for later.

The merchant sat at table with the innkeeper, the two talking business, making a few bargains and swapping stories.  They seemed to know each other well.  The merchant ordered a specialty of the house - a Dwarven ethnic meal for himself at a price of 9 silver along with Elven Wine at a whopping 1 gold per glass. The captain of the guard and the retainer ate well, but not as lavishly.  Their dinners cost 8 silvers apiece, plus another 2 silvers each for a large ale.  Theirs was paid for by the merchant.
