Mission of San Cristobal
The mission church of Glencia Portos stands proudly near the center of town, its clapboard walls painted a weathered white that gleams under the Sequoyah sun. Though only one story tall, its steep-pitched roof and square bell tower rise high above the rooftops, making the church the tallest landmark in the gorge.
Inside, the long nave stretches to the simple wooden altar beneath a small crucifix, the scent of candle wax and incense lingering in the air. Sunlight slants through narrow windows of coloured glass, casting dappled bands of colour across worn pews polished smooth by decades of faithful hands. To the left, a small side room doubles as the priest's office and vestry, where vestments hang neatly and a battered desk holds ledgers and letters.
The mission is tended by Father Ignacio Vega, a lean, silver-haired man in his late fifties whose voice carries with the authority of years in the cloth. He holds Mass each Sunday morning at eight and Vespers in the evening, calling the faithful with the ringing of the great bell. Father Ignacio is known for his compassion but has little patience for idle gossip — though some claim he once rode with vaqueros before taking holy vows.
