La Sombra Cantina

La Sombra Cantina is a squat adobe building with a flat roof, its walls whitewashed just enough to stand out against the dusty courtyard of the mission. A low wooden door opens into a single room dimly lit by lanterns and whatever sunlight slips through the small shuttered windows. Rough tables and mismatched chairs are scattered across a packed dirt floor, while a long plank bar runs along the back wall. A pot of beans or stew often simmers over the fire, filling the room with a rich, earthy aroma.

The cantina is run by Mateo Vargas, a broad-shouldered man with a booming laugh and a quick hand when trouble starts. Behind the bar he keeps a heavy club, though most nights a hard stare from Mateo is enough to quiet hot tempers.
