Dona Rosa Cafe
This low, single-story wood-frame building sits at the bend in the main road, right beside the Cantina and across from Ortega's General Mercantile. A hand-painted sign over the door reads "CAFÉ" in fading red letters, and the smell of fresh coffee and frying bacon drifts out to tempt anyone passing by. Inside, the space is tight, with a handful of small tables and mismatched chairs squeezed close together. A battered iron stove at the back throws out a steady heat, making the place swelter in summer but cozy when the gorge winds cut cold.
The café is owned and run by Doña Rosa Alvarez, a sturdy woman with sharp eyes and a quicker tongue who claims her coffee could "wake the dead and make them dance." Breakfast costs a nickel — usually eggs, beans, and fresh tortillas — while lunch runs a dime, often stew or tamales when she can get the ingredients. Coffee is always included.
Rosa lives in a cramped room behind the kitchen, and locals say the café never truly closes. There's always someone inside nursing a cup of coffee, trading gossip, or sobering up after a hard night at the Cantina next door.
