The Myshak people were a nation who dwelt in what is now Lantaren in the distant past. The Myshaks built a great empire, now called Myshaka, believed to have risen among the ruins of the Valtian Empire in northern Notios. They spread steadily southward and are said to have ruled northern and central Notios for "a thousand years", before their empire was finally defeated and destroyed in a decades-long guerrilla war fought by the holy warriors of the Order of Lantat, whose leaders founded Lantaren upon the ashes of Myshaka.

The Myshaks spoke a language called Anaquali, traces of which can be found in modern Lantari. For many years there were communities within Lantaren that still held to the old tongue, and spoke only Anaquali, but the Lantari were ruthless in suppressing the language and went so far as to wipe out entire tribes of the former Myshak confederacy who refused to conform.
