Fifth Age - Hell on Urthe: The Tower of Math
Though they found Talhamnoduin aflame and in the grip of war, luck was with the party as the patrol that met them as they approached in the mists was friendly enough, under the command of an old soldier named Nathrum who answered to your new friend Wulgreth who was, albeit reluctantly, leading the uprising against the Drow.
The rebels had cast Dinear (known as the Silent One and former ruler of the city) from her palace and she was now holed up with her Knights in the citadel that sat atop the old granaries, with the might of the Tower of Math at their backs.
Nathrum guided the party into the city by a circuitous route via the West Gate. Within the walls the acrid stench was almost overpowering, and it was a relief when they arrived at the Pit, the tavern where they first met Wulgreth, now the command centre for the uprising.
The party were met by Melonda, the strange young woman who is friends with Wulgreth and seemed to have attached herself to them. She bore the wounds of battle but allowed Dyavaen to heal her, attracting no little attention, most of all from Wulgreth himself, head bloodied and roughly bandaged.
Wulgreth described the situation, and how the brief appearance of the sun in the sky turned the tide of battle but complained of too much talking and too little fighting now that Dinear had been ousted from the palace. He dispatched his man Jac to learn what he could of other Towers of Maths, who brought back the scholar Darrud who spoke of his belief that all the Towers were connected by a Hall of Doors, a term that meant something to Alasha'an and Brugar who were among those who had braved the Gardens of Brother Inurien once before.
Hoping that they might make use of these Doors to find the Tower they needed, the party agreed to go with Wulgreth on a raid on the Tower in his city to winkle the foe out of their hole.
Climbing the wall that surrounded the Tower, the party found themselves trapped in Inurien's everchanging gardens, unable to retreat, soon learning that they had been taken over by the Drow.
Solving that latest, seemingly endless variation of riddles and puzzles (though not without loss, for Dyavaen died in so doing), the tokens they had garnered created a column of light, a gateway that should have brought them to Inurien's Hall of Doors ...
... but whereas the journey should have been no more arduous than the passing from one room to another, that transition was something entirely less pleasant.
Stepping into the light they were blinded by the brightness, buffeted by a cacophony of noise and howling winds that tore the weapons from their hands, pummelled by blows from unseen assailants, flesh seared by fire and lightning while their lungs seem filled with a viscous substance that does not allow the drawing of breath, as they fell through a void, pulled hither and thither by those winds.
Everything went black as the party slammed into something very solid. Lying in the darkness, gasping for breath, barely able to believe that they had survived, they became aware of a muffled chuckling from somewhere above.
Kindling a light, the party found themselves in a pit, with Wulgreth on death's door. Imprisoned by an invisible wall above and spells that left them bereft of all magic, ne'ertheless they refused calls to surrender ... but their unseen captors loosed a demon upon them. The outcome was inevitable for the trap had been well set, and though the party fought bravely they were eventually bested and the darkness claimed them.
