Evil and chaotic characters are welcome in Freehold, and as the game goes on, there will be more and more for nefarious PCs to do in the community—hidden cults, secret societies, and political manipulation or intrigue are all encouraged.

Applicants who wish to play evil characters should know that most Freeholders are of good or neutral alignment, though, and so openly evil acts will not only make you few friends, but are also likely to be punished under Freehold law. We recommend that evil characters stick to behind-the-scenes wickedness if they want to have fun, and try to find at least one evil friend so you don't feel isolated or ostracized by the community. Of course, PCs who don't know you're evil can't judge or alienate you if they never find out! Likewise, it's critical to keep in mind that evil equals intent; your PC can be evil and still experience love, loyalty, friendship, honor, compassion, and even altruism. What matters is that they have ultimately wicked aims, or are willing to do terrible things to accomplish a goal—even a noble one.

The same goes for chaotic neutral characters: We do not ban alignments that some people find difficult to control or identify with, but we do require that players with characters of those alignments enact them maturely, responsibly, and creatively. Don't be that chaotic neutral or chaotic evil stereotype that so many gamers hate to have in their group!

That being said, please be aware that we do pay attention to the personality and moral compass of characters. Since this is a long-term game, you will have plenty of opportunity to establish, demonstrate, maintain, and evolve a PC, and fellow players will certainly not only notice trends in their behavior, but also occasions when a PC breaks character. Make sure to select an alignment you can live with—or plan to be flexible. Either way, applicants are hereby warned that we do not consider TV Tropes and similar to be reputable sources for determining how the various alignments should be played.
