Much of Gdansk's heavy industry was lost during the war, been scrapped in the aftermath, or left to decay from neglect. What hasn't been lost is predominately idle due to a lack of power and raw materials, though some factories have resumed production. Elsewhere, small scale cottage industries have sprung up, tending to the post-war needs of the city. The Factory District is an area in the north of the Old City Quarter, which contains the bulk of Gdansk's operating industry base. Enough goods are produced that Gdansk has recently become a major exporter in the region again, nearly all of which is controlled by the Merchant Union, rival newcomers, Inicjatywa GdaĆsk Robotniczy (IGR). Due to a lack of functioning currency, the worker's meager wages are often supplemented with free boarding, protection, and meals. For this, many factories, large or small, have worker's quarters either on site or elsewhere in the city.
