Appearance:
Billy wears the standard woodland camouflage pattern BDU's he was issued with and they are beginning to show their aged, faded and patched. He wears the standard British PLCE load bearing system over a PLCE assault vest. The rest of his equipment is British from his Mk6 helmet to his CAB boots.
He now carries a RPD machine gun and three drum mags attached to his PLCE for it. A Browning HP pistol is mounted in a cross draw holster on his chest and the other obvious weapon is a knife and scabbard on his left shoulder pad which came from Captain Little's gear.
Background:
It was hard for Billy not to be drawn into the military campaign that was planned and orchestrated from the house he lived in. The Shankill Road area of Belfast was the heartland of the Loyalist struggle in Northern Ireland and his family were in the thick of it both mentally and physically. His Great Grandfather was a founding member of the Ulster Volunteers when they were formed in 1912, his grandfather was a council member of the Ulster Volunteer Force and his father and uncles in 1966 formed the modern Ulster Defence Association.
As he was growing up Billy played many roles within the UDA as a runner, lookout and Intel gatherer. He also was kept “clean” by his father, no involvement with the constables. Before the age of 17 he watched his brother and uncle killed and attended several friends funerals.
He joined the Ulster Defence Regiment not long after his seventeenth birthday. Several of his loyalist friends and colleagues were already serving in this regiment and gaining valuable skills for the cause. It also gave MI6 a direct link for the intelligence they supplied and for the more specialized training they provided. He was still an active member of the UDA during the many years he served with the regiment. Eventually he was 2IC of the Lower Shankill 2nd Battalion, C. Company and was personally in charge of this company's hit brigade.
Billy used his time with the regiment to undertake the combat engineer course and when the opportunity arouse just before combat began the PARA course.
It was the Parachute regiment he was assigned to when hostilities broke out and the one he served all of his war with.
