Impediment
An impediment is a type of weakness or disability a character may have such as being blind, deaf, sickly, missing an eye, missing an arm, and so forth. A GM rates impediments as minor, moderate, or major. A character gains +10 bonus XP for a minor impediment, +30 bonus XP for a moderate impediment, and +100 bonus XP for a major impediment. They can have only up to 3 impediments and impediments must fit the setting to even grant these bonuses. For example, being blind in a science fiction setting where bionic eyes are cheap to purchase would not be much of an impediment but being unable to read in a futuristic setting would be crippling because you're unable to use most technology.
WEAKNESSES (optional)
Weaknesses function just like abilities except that they enforce a penalty instead of a bonus, they are ranked down instead of up, and you gain XP for having them instead of spending XP.
The GM sets limits on weaknesses but the default is a maximum of 3 weaknesses which do not have the normal rank Maximum that abilities do but instead each have a maximum rank equal to their highest rank ability.
Instead of a penalty, a weakness may also be something difficult that you must do in order to survive that a human wouldn't need to do or something commonplace that harms you that normally wouldn't harm a human (like superman's kryptonite).
The rank determines the frequency or risk factor in the activity or the extent of damage caused. Since you can have only up to 3 weaknesses, they have no step-ladder restriction, but cannot have a higher rank than your 2nd-highest ability's rank.
