The Empire is bordered on its south by the World's Edge Mountains, which form a firm barrier against invasion. It's not completely impermeable, and eruptions of Greenskins form their mountain holds or through the various passes periodically occur.

Despite the dangers, there are people who have settle beyond the mountains, in the plains on the southern flanks. This is a dangerous land. there is little protection available from bandits, roving bands of orcs, or any of the other mysterious threats that emanate from the Badlands further south. Still, there are those who gladly settle in these dangerous regions for the chance to escape Imperial taxation, or perhaps Imperial justice.

These scattered settlements are known as the Border Princes. They are a heterogenous bunch; both in ethnicity, since exiles from all across the Old World make their way to these lawless lands; and in their own internal organisation. There are glorified bandit camps, petty dictatorships, and little republics established by political ideologues.

Further to the west, the south is more civilised. Two peninsulas extend from the southwest of the Old World. Tilea is a land divided between independent, often warring city states. Most of these are republics, dominated by merchant houses. They regularly struggle against one another using the forces of mercenary companies, so much so that Tilean mercenaries are famous across the Old World for their experience and professionalism. Long ago, Tilea was the base of an empire which stretched across the south of the Old World and formed the most advanced civilisation of the day. The Classical Language of the time, from which modern Tilean is descended, is still to this day used as the language of learning and scholarship even to the north in the Empire.

The larger peninsula of Estalia, further west, is similarly divided, into a series of warring kingdoms. As with Tilea, Myrmidia is the most popular object of worship; and Estalians insist she was born in Magritta in Estalia. Estalia is famous for its bull-fighting and for its fencing. The Diestros of Estalia, with their unique fighting style, can sometimes be found travelling far and wide to prove their mettle in foreign lands.
