The Rites of Hospitality
Cities, towns, and even villages are few and far between in the frontier of Athos. Yet, few folk can survive this land on their own. As a result, the Rites of Hospitality have become a sacred tradition upheld across the land — weary travelers can request succor at any steading or lord’s hall they happen across and expect shelter and sustenance, at least for a time.  Even those, given to be monstrous in aspect, hungrier for news and diversion (over mortal flesh) have been known to grant hospitality.  The Rites take the form of a ritual contract, upheld by the runes of the ancient ættir of the parties involved. Betrayal, violence, and murder do happen from time to time, even when the Rites have been observed. Mere words cannot prevent treachery of this sort but these base actions may call down the fury of the ættir whose rune has been broken.  Pity greyshields, outlaws, and outcasts... those with no family or clan, for they have no ættir to protect them.
