Fourth Age - Old Urthe: Return of the Stone

Approaching Kalibar, the party found their access to the city hindered by a large queue at Trader's Gate. Calanor's papers got them past the inquisitive guards, allowing them into the city, where they headed straight to Justice Square and the Mayoral Palace, intent on returning the Stone. It was at this point that Melzakre, after staring at the sky for some time, abruptly took his leave.

Ushered in by one of the Elder Daughters, Corana, wife of the esteemed Brislar Fyfield (one of the Chosen, a powerful Elementalist, Advisor to the Mayor, and the man who sent both Slayer and Calanor on the quest to recover the Philosopher's Stone), the party (except for Neel who preferred to stay in the gardens) were greeted warmly by the Mayor, Lord Fendock Gask, himself. Unperturbed by Alasha'an's reluctance to simply hand the Stone over, the party were led by Fendock down to the secret Chamber of Mirrors that they might replace it themselves.

However, before they could do so, the party were attacked by the Mayor and a contingent of Guards, who were revealed to be shape-changed Snakemen ! Battling bravely, and assisted by Brislar's magics and a few loyal soldiers, the party triumphed. Restoring the Stone to its rightful place, the Mirrors were reactivated ... to show scenes of horror ! At all three main Gates Snakemen, hidden in the guise of ordinary people, were exposed by the Mirror's magic to be mingling undetected amidst the citizens of Kalibar.

The surviving Snakemen in the Chamber of Mirrors were questioned, but all they would say was that they needed the Stone to awaken 'Sleeper' and thus unleash destruction ...

Hasty plans were made for dealing with the menace. Using the King's Gate, the only city Gate that was closed to the general populace, those Snakemen masquerading as Guards were weeded out. Rumours of plague were spread, both to explain the Mayor's absence, that visitors and the like could be kept away, and to encourage ordinary citizens to take a short vacation from the city. Watch was kept upon the Gates that any Snakemen passing through, revealed by the Mirrors, could be dealt with.
