Freehold’s administrative staff make an effort to remain approachable and reachable at all times. We might not respond to a query right away (after all, we have things that call us away from the computer, just like you!), but we do try to quickly get around to everyone who has a question, concern, or a need to talk. While our GMs work together on just about everything, the workload is divided somewhat into areas of specialization, and you are more likely to get a better answer, faster, if you address your comment or PM to the GM whose responsibilities most closely match the nature of the issue. You can easily find a GM's schedule of availability and areas of expertise listed clearly in their character description.

All players and applicants should also be aware that GMs are on a mandatory rotating schedule of leave, to take time away from the game and recharge before burnout has a chance to set in. Each month (when possible), a single GM is officially "on vacation" for one week; the next month it will be the next GM, and so on. This means only a single GM is gone at any given time, and while they may still be reached for emergencies, we ask that the community respect the GMs' need to occasionally take a few days away from Freehold in order to come back at full strength.

You can find out which GM is currently on leave by checking their character description.

For Applicants

Those wishing to become a GM rather than solely a player should be aware of our administrative staff policies: Since Freehold is a large, active, complex game, all our GMs must be able to cooperate and work together as a team, and should be willing to sacrifice some extra personal time to the game when necessary in order to address issues as they arise or to keep things running smoothly. A GM must be able to post multiple times daily, and should be available off and on during most weekends, as well.

While we do not request this information during the application process, anyone who is actually accepted as a new GM is required to provide at least one other reliable method of communication with the existing administrative staff, preferably the e-mail address you check most often, a social media account, or a telephone number where you can receive texts. This is to ensure that, in the event of a catastrophic site malfunction or other lack of communication, your fellow GMs can reach you and expect to receive a prompt reply. All GMs must have access to Discord client chat or another reliable chat program, as well, in order to participate in prescheduled live administrative meetings; to Dropbox, in order to access group projects and the game file backups via cloud storage; and to MapTool and TokenTool, for the obvious reasons.

Please note that, much as prospective players must endure a mandatory lurker period before full acceptance into the game, GM applicants should also expect to lurk for a minimum of 2 weeks before being given access, after which we institute a probationary period of 6 months as a moderator before promoting successful applicants to full GMs.
