Gameplay Modes

Gameplay is split into three modes: actions scenes, exposition scenes, and downtime.

Taking Action

Your stats in Mythos are based on your character's domains and attempts to create, impose, avoid, or resist, effects and actions. When you attempt to do or resist anything, you select a domain you have and roll a number of d10s equal to 1 + your rank in that domain. You get a success for every roll of 6 or higher. Each success gives you a greater degree of effectiveness in the effect you're trying to create.

If the GM rules you used a domain that was not appropriate to the task at hand, they can impose a penalty to your total number of successes. Typically a -1 success if it's slightly off or cut your # of successes in half (rounded down, minimum -2) if it's majorly off.

If you attempt to impose your effect on a creature or protected object, you reduce your dice pool by the rank in the domain the target uses to resist (minimum 1 die). If you don't know the target's rank or are in a play by post game, you roll your normal pool and they reduce your number of success by half their rank (rounded down).

Overlap
You may try to use a domain to do something that falls under another domain's purview. Whenever this happens, you can still attempt the action as long as it can be reasonably explained withing the domain you're using but get only half your normal rank. For example, trying to use a rank 4 Life domain to invigorate a creature against harm would normally fall under the Endurance domain, so you could still do so but are treated as only having rank 2.

Superhuman
When you attempt to do anything, you must determine if its something a normal adult human being could do. Depending on how possible it is for a human to pull off the effect, you may have bonus die to your pool:

Impossible: +0 die
Requires advanced magic/hi-tech: +1 die if you actually have such tools
Requires basic common items: +2 die if you have such tools
Can be done with your bare hands: +3 die
