The M252 81 mm medium weight mortar is a British designed smooth bore, muzzle-loading, high-angle-of-fire weapon used for long-range indirect fire support to light infantry, air assault, and airborne units across the entire front of a battalion zone of influence.
The M252 is an indirect fire weapon. It can fire at up to 100 increments rather than the usual 10. The user must be able to see the target or otherwise have its position effectively communicated. If the attack misses, an observer can note where the attack hit and can send a correction, or the attacker can correct by themselves if the target is in sight. Each correction reduces the range penalty by 2. It takes a full-round action for an observer to transmit a correction.
