Tom grew up in the Azeri foothills in a small village that still clung on to its German heritage. He always enjoyed working with heavy machinery and when he was conscripted in the early eighties he gravitated toward the motor pool of a Motorised Rifle Division.

Being from the east from the country, his unit was sent into the mountains of Afghanistan to fight the Mujahadeen there. Tom proved to be a good mechanic and a solid driver and soon he'd been selected as the personal driver of Major Josef Ivanovich, the commander of the division's recce unit. He stayed in country when his unit was rotated out, remaining with "his" Major who later became "his" Colonel.

The Colonel was absent during one mission, he was back at the HQ begging for more supplies, and Tom was driving a rookie Captain's BTR when they were hit by an Afghan ambush. Tom managed to drag the Captain free but took a sniper hit to his left hand. When he finally got the injured Captain and the rest of the patrol home, it was found that his hand was infected and needed to be amputated.

Tom had thought that his life in the army would be over after his injury, but two things kept him in the service. The first was that his Colonel insisted that he still needed his drive and the other was the fact that the Captain's grandfather was a senior member of the Politburo.

Tom watched the withdrawals from Afghanistan and then followed his Colonel from post to post until his Colonel became his General.

When the war started with China, Tom drove his General's command vehicle across the border and throughout the long slog through China. When the front started to fall apart and the Soviets started using nuclear weapons, Tom's General withdrew his men in good order, misinterpreting an order to stand and die.

The inquiry led to his General being sent to a prison somewhere and Tom expected to face a firing squad or to be dangling from a meathook. Instead, the Politburo intervened and he was busted down to private and sent to the Western Front.

Sick of the increasingly brutal regime and seeing that the Soviet occupation was little better than banditry, Tom tried to make a run for it. He was recaptured by some bounty hunters who would have handed him over for execution if the Mad Dogs hadn't intervened.
