So, some history! The planet is just called Earth, for simplicity's sake. There are a couple of large continents on one hemisphere and another larger on the other side of the globe. There are also innumerable small islands dotted around the seas. The 2 continents on the same side have regular trade and travel, with the widest part of the sea between them only about 600 miles, an easily navigable distance. By contrast, there is very little contact with the third continent, because this distance is so great the voyage is several months long, over treacherous seas that are not easy to safely cross. It is doable, but the vast majority simply don't care enough to take the risk.
The northern of these 2 continents is called Fredike and is traditionally the home of the smaller races, notably gnomes and halflings. In fact, even though most areas have a fairly even demographic assortment, many of the older cities in Fredike still have homes and businesses that are built to accommodate much smaller stature, and consequently usually have a "business" area nearby, to serve people of a larger persuasion. The capital city is also named Fredike and was the seat of power of the emperor who united the warring tribes together for the first time, generations ago. The continent and city are named for him. Now, the nation is ruled democratically. The former emperors 5x great-granddaughter stepped down as ruler over 1000 years ago, and the country has been a democratic nation ever since. They tend to choose a very neutral stance when it comes to the  conflict that does not involve them.
This is contrasted by Ralan Gul, the continent to the south. There is no centralized nation, but rather a collection of city-states that nominally are under one banner, but in practice squabble and fight over any and everything. The infighting takes many forms, from secret coalitions to hinder other city-states, to open warfare.
The people in Ralan Gul are fiercely independent and extremely loyal to their city of origin. So far, the petty intrigues have not led to a war that encompasses the whole continent, but the nature of the centuries of old grudges and machinations means that conflict of some kind between the city-states is a basic daily occurrence.
Demographically, they hold a roughly average split among most races, as does Fredike. However, the relationships between the races differ from one continent to the other. In Ralan Gul, your worth to society is based on your loyalty and support of your city, and race does not matter as much. There are, of course, bigots, just like everywhere, but the racial tension is replaced by a sort of nationalism. In Fredike, however, racial prejudice is rampant, despite being decried by all forward-thinking people. With no external target for their tension for generations, racial violence is high.
Economically, the 2 continents do partake in trade, with different regions producing various goods and robust sailing fleets of both private and corporate ships ferry goods between them.
You may be noticing that I am leaving the third continent out. That is purposeful. The third continent is unnamed, or at least no one who has made the journey and returned with tales has ever given one. There is an indigenous population, but the literal millennia of separation mean that the language and customs are vastly different, and communication is further hampered by the native's distrust of outsiders. So far, the stories indicate a nomadic people, with few permanent structures, so it is difficult to even find the people to try and clear the language they speak. The stories do mention that members of most races seem to be present, but living in a communal way that is unheard of on the other two continents.
