19 FAMILY

19.1 Visiting Family

Unless he or she is an orphan, a character may visit his family when in their province of birth. Each visit is a weekly action, and gains the character no benefit, except giving his family pleasure (though carousing is possible and characters accompanied by their mistress are judged to have satisfied the FC requirement). At the end of the visit, the character may try to scrounge money from his or her father. Roll a d6, add 1 for every week’s visit after the first and subtract 2 for each previous time the character has scrounged money. First sons get +1, bastards and daughters -1.

d6 RollMoney Scrounged
0 or lessNone. Allowance Terminated.
1-2None
3-4Allowance x 2 Livres
5-6Allowance x 5 Livres
7+Allowance x 10 Livres

19.2 Death

Each month players who are not orphans may ask the GM to check if there has been a death in the family - the request should be written as a premonthly order. If such a request is made, a death will be deemed to occur on a roll of 3 or less on 2D6 and the character will learn of this at the end of the month. If the roll comes up the family member in question is decided on a further roll of 1D6 as below:

d6 RollWho Dies
1-3Older Brother (Equal chance for all remaining)
4Sister or Younger Brother
5Mother
6Father

If a brother of higher sibling rank dies, the character’s sibling rank increases by one. If the family member shown is already dead, ignore the result.

On a death in the family, the character may spend the first week of the following month they can at home for the funeral (treated like a visit to Church), unless he is on campaign or is a bastard. (The King will allow those required to attend Court leave of absence if necessary). A PC priest may be engaged to conduct the service as with a marriage ceremony. The bereaved PC cannot scrounge money during this week, but may stay on afterwards.

The father will pay for the funeral, or the oldest brother if the father is dead. Funeral costs are (Starting SL x 10 Livres). The +1 on starting SLs for first sons is not included in this calculation.

If the father is dies a die roll is made for the eldest brother (if any). On 1-3 he already has a son of his own, who will inherit if the eldest brother subsequently dies.

19.3 Inheritance

If the father has died, the character gains no more allowance, but immediately inherits an amount according to his current sibling rank (see Orphans, Section 1.1). Bastards inherit nothing.

If another member of the family dies, the character will inherit Livres equal to his allowance from the deceased, with the following modifiers:

Brother: Allowance x 2
Sister: Allowance x 0.5

19.3.1 Inheritance of First Sons (and only daughters)

The first sons of commoners get the sum mentioned as going to orphaned first sons in the standard birth tables.

The first sons of Gentlemen and nobles also inherit the family estate - a small estate in the case of Gentlemen, one commensurate with their father's rank if noble. Provided their father was not impoverished, they get the estate plus (listed cash inheritance minus estate value) in cash.

If their father was impoverished, it means that the estate has been mortgaged to the hilt (See Estates Section below). The first son gets title to the estate, and any title that goes along with it, but receives no revenue from it unless or until the mortgage is paid off (costs 60% of the estate's value).
